 Maritime Industry Leaders Meet to Discuss Security

The 2017 United States Department of Transportation Maritime Administration Company Security Officer (CSO) and National Maritime Interagency Advisory Group (NAIG) Meeting was hosted by Texas A & M University at Galveston and the Texas A&M Maritime Academy on September 19th and 20th.  The conference’s purpose was to discuss and obtain input on current security policy and proposed changes to policy with the nation’s maritime industry. 

Conference attendees included keynote speaker Congressman Randy Weber welcomed by Texas A & M University Galveston Campus head, Col. Michael Fossum, U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) officers, foreign and local industry members, Texas A&M University at Galveston faculty and students including both cadets and Maritime Administration business students.

Congressman Weber addressed the importance of security for the maritime system and the importance of the maritime industry to the nation’s economy.  The maritime industry is responsible for transporting 90 percent of cargo across country borders and 25 percent of domestic cargo.
