Senator Larry Taylor Appointed to Texas Commission on Public School Finance

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick announced today that Senator Larry Taylor, R-Friendswood, has been appointed to the Texas Commission on Public School Finance. The appointment comes upon the enactment of House Bill 21, which created the commission and was sponsored by Senator Taylor.

"The creation of this commission has been a long time coming, and I am pleased that we are going to finally be able to get to work. Tackling this monumental issue has been my top priority and a priority for Governor Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Patrick and the Legislature as a whole. It is with this broad basis of support that we will begin overhauling our outdated system," said Senator Taylor. "We have been given a unique opportunity to unravel the patchwork scheme of school finance in order to build an equitable and efficient system that will shape the future of Texas".

Upon appointing the commission's members, Lieutenant Governor Patrick said, "For the first time in nearly four decades, legislators will be convened to exclusively examine the state's school finance system and recommend the best path forward for our state. Senate Education Chairman Larry Taylor, R-Friendswood, has been a leading advocate for the commission."

The Texas Commission on Public School Finance is charged with making recommendations on a comprehensive restructuring of the public school finance system. Chairman Taylor is joined on the commission by fellow appointees Senator Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, Senator Royce West, D-Dallas, and Pflugerville ISD Superintendent, Dr. Doug Killian. Governor Abbott and Speaker Straus will also appoint members to the commission. Their appointees have yet to be announced.
