Astros/Rockets games may cause traffic/parking delays Downtown

This evening, Friday October 13th, 2017 at 7:00 p.m., the Houston Astros will take on the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series at Minute Maid Park.  At the same time, the Houston Rockets will take on the San Antonio Spurs in an NBA Pre-season game.

These two large events happening at the same time has the potential to cause traffic and parking delays for those heading to them, or those who will be downtown.

The City of Houston is offering the following tips for people headed downtown:

  • Use METRO Bus & Rail whenever possible.  To find out which routes can get you where you want to go, and for more information on riding METRO, visit or download the RideMETRO App
  • Plan extra time to find, pay for, and walk from parking to the event venue.  Download the City of Houston's ParkHouston App for Apple or Android for an easy way to find, and pay for parking at City-Operated meters and lots.
  • Plan to carpool if possible.  This limits the amount of vehicles downtown and will help minimize congestion.
  • Call a Taxi or Ride-share to get downtown. No parking hassle required!
  • Please remember that prices for parking downtown will likely increase dramatically given the amount of need today, so plan accordingly.
  • If you plan to drink, please do so responsibly.  Pick a designated driver ahead of time, or use a taxi/rideshare service to get home.
The Houston Police Department (HPD) will be increasing the number of officers in downtown, and will be deploying extra Mobility Assistance Teams to keep traffic moving.

HPD also reminds residents to reduce their chances of being burglarized by leaving all valuables at home, or store them in your vehicles trunk before you park.
