Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church celebrates heritage in Galveston
by Ruth Ann Ruiz
Sunday, October 15, 2017

Galveston Greek FestivalThe 34th annual Greek Festival at Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Galveston kicked off on Saturday with dancing, food, wine, metal artistry and lots of opas. Stanley Marinos and Mary Jo Naschke co-chairs of the event worked together with volunteers who came from across the Houston/Galveston region to create a celebration honoring the traditions of Greece.

Father Stelios conducted tours of the church along with providing any interested attendees in the history of the Greek Orthodox faith. Ancient Grecian music complete with the sounds of the Byzantine area was provided  by The Golden Greek lead by Alex Kalos.

The Dancing Thalassapoulia, Greek dancers under the direction of Homer Rigas, performed under the tent. With their dashing smiles, kicks, and scarves they offered joyous entertainment through ancient Greek line dancing.

Guests like the volunteers came from all over the region. Many of the guests spoke fluent Greek. A celebration of Hellenism, the Greek Festival is designed to welcome visitors to a community steeped in tradition and brimming with hospitality.

The festivities continue through 6pm on Sunday.  http://www.galvestongreekfestival.com/
