You Only Live Twice: Halo House’s 007 Gala!

HOUSTON – You only live twice, but you don’t want to miss this once in a lifetime event! On November 11, 2017 Halo House will host its 7th annual Gala at the beautiful Ballroom at Bayou Place in downtown Houston.  Special guests will be Dr. John Mendelsohn, former President of the MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Anne Mendelsohn. They will be honored for their relentless dedication to fighting cancer, and for John’s support of Halo House over the years. In December Halo House will break ground on a facility dedicated to mid-term housing of blood cancer patients. This year’s gala will be the catalyst to finish off the campaign and raise the remaining $1 million of the $12.1 million project cost. The James Bond themed evening will be filled with dancing, plus a live and silent auction.

According to Executive Director Kathleen Fowler, “The new Halo House facility will allow us to provide approximately 11,000 days of housing annually. This will be a wonderful facility for Houston, and for patients who need the world class cancer treatment available at our Texas Medical Center. We are grateful to have received tremendous support from the Houston community.”

Gala tickets are available until October 28. To purchase tickets, or to partner with Halo House to help build this beautiful new facility, please visit A variety of naming opportunities are available to honor friends and family, with small pavers starting at $250.  Pledges may be paid over a three year period.

Halo House is a 501 (c3) public charity founded in 2009 by MD Anderson Cancer Center oncologist Dr. Nathan Fowler and his mother, retired business owner Kathleen Fowler. Their vision is that one day no one battling the blood cancers leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma will have to worry about where they are going to live during treatment in Houston or going bankrupt while paying for living, eating, and parking expenses here and their rent or mortgage back home.

These patients come to Houston because treatment is either not available locally or has already failed and they’ve been told by their doctor that coming to the Texas Medical Center is their best chance of survival. Halo House apartments are only $20 per day, an amount that is substantially lower than area hotels, which average $120 - $229/night. Since opening the doors to its first two apartments in 2011, Halo House has expanded to 11 apartments, housed over 270 families, and provided over 17,000 days of housing.  Halo House has 85 to 100 people on our wait list every day.
