News Release
Friday, October 20, 2017

The National Weather Service says the Houston area can expect to see very heavy rainfall throughout the morning.  This rain could trigger flash flooding and quickly fill freeway underpasses and frontage roads.

Flash flood warnings have been issued for neighboring communities along the I-45 South Freeway, as storm systems move towards the City of Houston.

What Should I Do?

The City of Houston Office of Emergency Management (OEM) advises Houston residents to begin preparing for the potential impacts:

  • Remove all outdoor items which can be tossed by strong wind gusts and secure them.
  • Be prepared to stay in place if dangerous flooding occurs in your area.
  • Communicate with your family ahead of time about what to do if you cannot get home at a normal time due to the heavy rain.
  • Have a plan to shelter-in-place at your home, school or business in the event of severe weather impact.
  • If a FLASH FLOOD WARNING is issued for your area, seek higher ground and avoid travel until the warning expires.

Reporting Damage

When it is safe to do so, report storm damage to the 311 Help & Information Line by calling 311 (713-837-0311), online at houston311.org, or via the Houston 311 App for iOS and Android.
You can report:

  • Trees or debris in City roadways
  • Street flooding
  • Flooding in homes or businesses
