Texas Attorney General Paxton: Texas Must Not Become a Sanctuary State for Abortion
Press Release
Friday, October 20, 2017

AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton today issued the following statement following a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in the case of an unlawfully-present minor alien’s request to have an abortion in Texas.

“We’re disappointed with today’s result from the D.C. Circuit.” Attorney General Paxton said. “Unlawfully-present aliens with no substantial ties to the U.S. do not have a right to abortion on demand. Texas must not become a sanctuary state for abortions.”

The D.C. Circuit gave the federal government until October 31 to find a sponsor to take custody of the 17-year-old from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) so she can be taken for an abortion. Last month, the minor illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico without her parents and is in the legal custody of HHS, which is caring for her and her unborn child at a shelter in Texas.
