ACC Regents Hear Presentation on Accreditation

Alvin Community CollegeThe Alvin Community College Board of Regents heard a presentation about the accreditation reaffirmation process during their meeting on October 19. 

Vice President of Instruction Dr. Cynthia Griffith presented the information regarding the college’s accreditation process with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. 

Accreditation reaffirmation helps provide colleges and their programs standardization and proof of academic integrity. ACC has received six accreditation reaffirmations.

In other action, the ACC Foundation delivered its annual report to the board. The 2015-16 Foundation president Dr. Jim Crumm told the board that the non-profit organization awarded more than $118,000 over the past year that went directly to student scholarships, Innovative Grants and additional programs at ACC.

The Foundation also raised funds for other programs on campus including the Summer Children’s Theatre Festival, Solar Lighting project and more.

“The mission of the Foundation is to provide opportunities to students, faculty and the college,” Crumm said. “This last year was a very busy and a very good year for the organization.”

The Foundation also matched $10,000 in donations to a Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to benefit students and staff affected by the storm.

Regents approved the submission of a grant proposal for relief efforts due to Hurricane Harvey. ACC is seeking a $329,352 in grant funds from the Texas Workforce Commission to assist with costs in assessing student needs, advisement, performance tracking and enrollment; acquiring equipment to support training opportunities; and designing and implementing training opportunities for students impacted by the hurricane.

President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht also reported to the board the recent selection of ACC as one of the top 150 community colleges in the nation and reminders of several upcoming community events.

Regents also:

-approved hiring of Associate Degree Nursing instructors Courtney Wolfe and Elizabeth Saucedo

-approved hiring of Digital Marketing specialist Sammi Sanders.

-approved President’s goals for 2017-18

-heard data report on affordability and accessibility

-approved revised board meeting schedule

-approved deactivation of Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring certificate

-approved offers on resale of trust properties

-approved board CEO annual cycle

-approved monthly financial reports 

The board will have its next meeting on Thursday, November 16 at 6 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center.
