Galveston County
Galveston County Commissioners Court
by John David Suayan
Monday, October 23, 2017

Galveston County Commissioners Court today voted 2-3, with only Darrell Apffel and Joe Guisti in favor, to defeat a motion approving disaster reappraisal for the county to reassess the values of properties damaged during Hurricane Harvey for tax purposes. Listen (35:18)

Tax Assessor-Collector Cheryl E. Johnson said disaster reappraisal “matters to property owners across Galveston County.”

“Harvey did not just cause physical damage to personal and real property, it caused mental damage as well,” said Johnson. “The goodwill you provide to vote for disaster reappraisal will go a long way to lifting some of the mental anguish across our county.”

Apffel said disaster reappraisal will reflect well “on all of the entities.”

“It’s fair, it’s right, and cost aside, we should do it,” he said.

Judge Henry and Commissioner Ken Clark stated that the county has no control over people’s appraisal values.

“We could only ask for reappraisal if we’re willing to pay for it,” said Judge Henry. “That doesn’t mean that the values will be altered… But that’s not the same as saying we have control of the appraisal value. We don’t.”

The commissioners court voted unanimously to renew a contract with Van Scoyoc Associates for federal lobbying services.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to memorialize late Galveston police officer Chris Sanderson.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to approve an amendment to the current lease agreement with the Texas General Land Office for the Jones Bay Boat Ramp.

The commissioners court deferred the following three items:

  • Consideration of approval of 2019 holiday schedule.
  • Consideration for authorization to utilize HGAC cooperative purchasing program's pool of staffing services contractors to procure a direct hire for Human Resources Director position.
  • Consideration of authorizing the County Judge to execute an interlocal agreement between the Galveston County Health District and the County of Galveston for the provision of medical services to Galveston County Health District Employees and their dependents, to Galveston County Health District eligible retirees and their dependents and Galveston County Health District COBRA eligible ex-employees.

All other agenda items were approved unanimously with all members present. Agenda
