Stakeholders to discuss voluntary bacteria reduction plan options

The Houston-Galveston Area Council will host a public meeting to discuss options for developing a voluntary bacteria reduction plan for Chocolate Bayou. The meeting will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, at the Brazoria County Public Library-Alvin Branch, 105 S. Gordon Street, Alvin.

Chocolate Bayou is located within the San Jacinto-Brazos Coastal Basin (Basin 11) project area. The Basin 11 project is a multi-year process to improve the quality of waterways, specifically reducing bacteria levels.

Since 2015, stakeholders met multiple times to develop and review the Basin Characterization Report. The report presents data and makes recommendations for reducing bacteria levels in the project area. It will now be used to develop a plan to reduce bacteria levels in Chocolate Bayou.

During this meeting, H-GAC will also work with stakeholders to create a coordination committee to guide this effort. The meeting is open to residents, businesses, governments, community organizations, and other stakeholders interested in taking part in the ongoing effort.

Basin 11 includes all or a portion of 50 cities, villages, and census-designated places in four counties (Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, and Harris).
