Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner today held a news conference regarding the Houston Astros' victory in the World Series, and announcing a celebration and parade for Friday.

Turner opened by thanking the Houston Astros for their hard work in winning the seven-game series, particularly following the impact of Hurricane Harvey, which flooded the city.

“They literally carried the city on their backs,” Turner said. Listen (20:26)

Turner noted the games and challenges the team faced in winning the title, and what it meant to the city.

“For us, this was personal,” he said. “When you consider 27 trillion gallons of water falling on our area, thousands of homes flooded, thousands of people having to rebuild, repair their homes, thousands of people still wondering how do we go from point A to point B, and yet still, thousands of individuals going through so much while they were in the stands, cheering on the Astros.”

He then announced that a celebration event, including a parade, would be held at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Susan Christian, with the mayor's office, provided details of the event. The city has also provided a website for parade details. Houston Parade Page

Houston city council members Ellen Cohen, Jack Christie and Amanda Edwards also spoke during the news conference.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo provided a rundown on safety during the event, noting that only four arrests took place on Thursday night, when the game took place in Los Angeles.

Houston Fire Chief Sam Pena asked those who attended celebrations to keep safety in mind during Friday's event.
