Homecoming Festivities Set for Saturday

BEAUMONT, Texas – Homecoming is a special time on campuses around the country and it is the same at Lamar University. The Cardinals’ 6 p.m. kick off against Central Arkansas will serve as the 2017 Homecoming game. Events have been taking place on campus throughout the week, and that continues through kick off.

Beginning at 11 a.m., fans can take part in Big Red’s Ride at Spindeltop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum. Big Red’s Rid is the first classic and antique car show that will take place before the annual Homecoming Parade. Admission is free and open to the public.

The annual Homecoming Parade begins at 2 p.m. and will run west on Lavaca Street and south on the MLK feeder road. The parade will consist of The Showcase of Southeast Texas LU marching band, LU spirit squads, floats by student organizations, alumni and community groups and local high school marching bands.

Once the parade is over, fans take part in the Cardinal Fan Fest beginning at 3 p.m. on the Plummer Lawn. The fan fest will end at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday’s game is being sponsored by Flint Hills and they are providing “We Are LU” T-shirts at Gate’s 1 and 2 while supplies last. The Fan Zone will once again be available for the younger fans tailgating with their families and will open at 2:30 p.m. While the younger fans are taking part in the Fan Zone, the adults are invited to the pregame concert beginning at 3 p.m. The Kaiser Brothers concert will take place near the marquee at the northwest end of the stadium. Fans can also watch the spirit walk, as the team walks from the library to the Dauphin Athletics Complex.

The Cardinals will be squaring off against a Central Arkansas squad that is currently ranked fourth nationally, and sits atop the Southland Conference with a perfect 6-0 record. UCA has won seven consecutive games since dropping their season opener at Kansas State.

Saturday’s game will kick off at 6 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium. Tickets still remain for Saturday, and can be purchased by calling (409) 880-1715, or by logging on to
