Higher Education
Galveston College Board of Regents
by Garrett Bryce
Thursday, November 09, 2017

The Galveston College Board of Regents on Wednesday voted unanimously to offer bachelor degree programs in Healthcare Management and Nursing, which would be the first bachelor degree programs offered in the college's 51 year history.

The approval is the first stage of a process in offering courses toward bachelor degrees in both programs. If the process is completed, classes in the programs are expected to begin in 2019.

The board voted unanimously to offer an Instrumentation Technician Level 1 Certificate.

The board voted unanimously to offer an associated of applied science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

The board voted unanimously to accept the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's Nursing and Allied Health Building Simulation and Skills Lab Capacity 2018-2019 Grant award.

The board voted 5-0-1, with Tino Gonzalez abstaining, to cast the college's 93 votes in favor of re-electing Victor Pierson to the Galveston Central Appraisal District Board of Directors.

Local taxing authorities nominated nine candidates for the five-member board. David Moss, Clay Morrison, Scott Brast, Pierson and Kevin Corcoran, who currently serve on the board, were nominated for re-election, while Vaun Henry, Mary Trish Hanks, Roney McCrary and Bruce Clawson were nominated as possible new members. Galveston County Tax Assessor-Collector Cheryl Johnson serves as an ex-officio member. Taxing entities in Galveston County may cast a number of ballots based on their percentage of the overall tax levy of the county.

The board voted 5-0-1, with Gonzalez abstaining, to approve the minutes of the October 11 meeting.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote. Regents Michael Hughes and Fred Raschke were absent. Agenda
