Galveston City Council, during its workshop today, discussed issues related to the city contribution to the Police Pension Fund.

Police Pension Fund Chair Geoffrey Gainer said the officers pay 20 percent more than their benefit is worth. Listen (27:57) [Audio begins after the start of the item due to technical issues]

“It’s disheartening because they are digging out of a hole that they were put in,” said Gainer. “Nobody here was on the council when in 2008 or 2009 when they made that cut, but there were officers here that were.”

Gainer implored the city council to “make it right.”

“Please ask me questions because there are some big decisions coming up and things that need to be done sooner rather than later,” he said.

The city council received an update on Island Transit services and costs from Assistant City Manager Rick Beverlin.

The city council also discussed trash issues on 73rd Street and decorating Broadway for Christmas.
