Washington D.C.
Rep. Culberson Applauds DOJ Enforcement of 8 USC 1373
Press Release
Wednesday, November 15, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Rep. John Culberson (TX-07) released the following statement today after the Department of Justice announced it has found on a preliminary basis, 29 additional jurisdictions to be Sanctuary Cities with policies inconsistent with 8 USC 1373. This important piece of public safety law enacted in 1996, was designed to require the unrestricted information sharing between state and local law enforcement and federal law enforcement authorities. Pursuant to existing federal law and the Department of Justice policy implemented under the prior administration, jurisdictions in violation of 8 U.S.C. 1373 are ineligible to receive federal grants administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

“Sanctuary cities are, unfortunately, a hub for illegal aliens and criminal activity. Jurisdictions cannot receive both federal law enforcement grant money and protect criminal illegal aliens. I applaud Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the entire team at the Department of Justice for taking thoughtful and deliberative actions to ensure that every jurisdiction that receives federal money, follows federal law. Continued enforcement is critical for the protection and wellbeing of all Americans.”
