by Garrett Bryce
Thursday, November 16, 2017

The Galveston Independent School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday voted unanimously to cast the district's 597 ballots in favor of re-electing Victor Pierson to the Galveston Central Appraisal District Board of Directors.

Pierson, along with Scott Brast, Clay Morrison, David Moss and Kevin Corcoran are seeking re-election to the five-member board, and Vaun Henry, Mary Trish Hanks, Roney McCrary and Bruce Clawson have also been nominated for election to the board. Galveston County Tax Assessor-Collector Cheryl Johnson also serves on the board as an ex-officio member. Taxing entities in Galveston County may cast a number of ballots based on their percentage of the overall tax levy of the county.

The board voted to re-elect Dr. Matthew Hay as board president, Dr. Jeff Temple as vice president and Mary Cazares as secretary.

Hay and Johnny Smecca took their oath of office during the meeting. Hay was re-elected to the board representing District 5-E in the November 7 election, while Smecca was elected to the previously vacant District 6-F position.

The board had unanimously voted to canvass the results of the election in a special meeting on Tuesday.

The board voted to approve utilizing the Lone Star Governance instrument to self-evaluate their performance every three months.

The board voted to approve a lease agreement for an approximately 31 acre tract of land adjacent to the Galveston Municipal Airport for use by the Island 4-H organization.

All items were approved. All votes were unanimous with all members present. Agenda
