Elementary and Primary Education
Houston ISD Board of Education
by Garrett Bryce
Friday, November 17, 2017

The Houston Independent School District Board of Education, in a special meeting on Thursday, voted 6-0-1, with Jose Leal abstaining, to approve a revised turnaround plan for Kashmere High School, as required by the Texas Education Agency.

Kashmere High School has rated “improvement required” for 8 consecutive years by state standards. The school district had submitted a required turnaround plan for the school in October, which was rejected by the state. The revised plan provides more details on how to improve outcomes at the school.

“Kashmere has made considerable progress, and we believe the plan and resources in place will help the school succeed” HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza said.  “We also believe the modified plan the Board approved addresses the Commissioner’s concerns and provides the greatest opportunity for Kashmere to meet state standards this year.” News Release

The board voted 5-0, with Leal and Holly Maria Flynn Vilaseca not present at the time of the vote, to approve an order canvassing the results of the November 7 election for single-member Districts I, V, VI, VII, IX and a special election for District III.

Districts 1 and III resulted in runoff elections, with no candidate receiving a clear majority. Sue Deigaard won election to District V, currently held by Michael Lunceford, while Vilaseca, Anne Sung and Wanda Adams were re-elected to Districts VI, VII and IX, respectively.

The board voted 5-0, with Leal and Vilaseca not present, to order a runoff election for December 9 for Districts I and III.

Elizabeth Santos and Gretchen Himsl will compete for District I in the runoff, while Jesse Rodriguez and Sergio Lira will be on the ballot for District III.

No other action items were on the agenda. Trustees Anna Eastman and Michael Lunceford were absent. Agenda
