ACC Regents Approve Emergency Purchases

Alvin Community College regents approved $75,000 in emergency purchases to help deal with damage to the campus from Hurricane Harvey during their meeting on November 16.

The storm’s torrential rains caused roof leaks, damaged sheetrock and carpeting and more. Several facilities were affected by the storm along with roof damage to Buildings E, J and N.

The college is currently working with insurance providers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to recover costs due to Hurricane Harvey.

In other action, the board approved adjustments to tuition and fees for the 2018-19 school year. The adjusments will affect testing fees, specific training courses, applications fees and technology fees.

All fee changes were initially approved by the college Student Fee Advisory Committee which includes six ACC students and members of the faculty and staff.

During the meeting, Regents also certified the vote from the bond issue during the November 7 election. The $48.5 million bond issue was rejected by voters with 54 percent voting against and 46 percent voting for.

ACC President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht reported to the board: the success of recent events such as University Day, the Fall Festival and the Veterans Day ceremony; the featuring of an academic advisor on a radio program; and the announcement of upcoming events.

Regents also:

-heard a presentation on Academic Affairs department

-approved hiring of Learning Commons director

-approved hiring of two academic advisors

-approved hiring of assistant registrar

- approved hiring of English instructor

- approved hiring of Biology instructor

-approved agreement with San Jacinto College student grant program

-approved casting votes for Brazoria County Appraisal District

-approved expenditures for HVAC services and equipment

-approved board training

The board will have its next meeting on Thursday, January 11 at 6 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center.
