Houston mayor tosses coin at TSU vs. PVU Labor Day Classic football game

HOUSTON - The Texas Southern University Tigers football team battled rival Prairie View A&M on November 25 in the annual Labor Day Classic.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who was the special guest of TSU President Austin Lane, provided the pre-game ceremonial coin toss. State Senator Borris Miles, along with State Representatives Harold Dutton, Senfronia Thompson, Alma Allen, Ron Reynolds, Shawn Thierry, and TSU Board Chairman Glenn Lewis, joined Mayor Turner at midfield.

Joel Cowley, president and chief executive officer of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR), presented President Lane with a $100,000 check to support the University’s Interdisciplinary Health Professions Simulation Center.

The Center, located in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, integrates interdisciplinary education, simulation training and inter-organizational collaboration into the Health Sciences curriculum.

Cowley was joined by HLSR Vice President Terence Fontaine, HLSR Director and Houston City Councilmember Dwight Boykins, and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

The TSU Tigers fought hard against Prairie View’s Panthers, but fell short in a 30-16 loss at BBVA Stadium.
