College of the Mainland
News Release
Monday, November 27, 2017

The Mexican Consulate in Houston recently awarded a grant of $30,000 to College of the Mainland to provide scholarships to students of Mexican origin at the college and fund testing fees for up to 34 COM students.

The award was made Nov. 15 at the Mexican Consulate in an informal ceremony attended by consulate employees and guests from the college.

“In mid-October, COM submitted a grant request of $4,930 to the consulate to help pay student testing fees for students of Mexican origin enrolling in Adult Education,” said Mary Ann Amelang, vice president for Institutional Advancement at COM. “Not only did the consulate approve the funds for our fees, but increased the award by nearly $23,880. This increase will provide scholarships for up to 15 students to attend COM.”

College of the Mainland is an annual host of “Consulate on the Go,” a program that brings consulate staff to communities outside Houston in an effort to help Mexican citizens renew their passports and provide other services. The project is coordinated by COM Spanish professor Rafael Naranjo.

Representing the consulate were Oscan Rodriguez Cabrera, Consulate General of Mexico, Rodrigo Acosta Gomez of Community and Cultural Affairs, and Carlos Sada Solana, Undersecretary of North America.

Representing the college were Dr. Warren Nichols, president, Dr. William McGarvey, a COM Foundation board member, Amelang, Dr. Susan Weeks, COM grant development officer, and Naranjo.
