Washington D.C.
Rep. Culberson Signs on to Bipartisan Letter on Dismal OMB Funding Request
Press Release
Friday, December 01, 2017

Washington D.C. – Today, Representative John Culberson (TX-07) joined a group of bipartisan colleagues from the Congressional delegations of Texas and Florida and sent a letter to Speaker Ryan, Leader Pelosi, Chairman Frelinghuysen, and Ranking Member Lowey to underscore the need to significantly improve the disaster supplemental appropriations bill.

“OMB’s dismal funding request displays a complete lack of understanding of the fundamental needs of Texans and Floridians alike. It’s unbelievable that OMB would propose something like this. Moreover, I’m deeply troubled that the administration’s response to the largest housing disaster in the history of the country contains no funds for housing.

“It’s important to remember that the Constitution vests the Congress with the responsibility for making these funding decisions. OMB’s request is simply that - it’s a recommendation. Unfortunately, it’s a dismal and severely underfunded one.

“I look forward to a swift response from my colleagues so that we can provide the adequate resources for Floridians and Texans to rebuild, repair and return to normal as quickly as possible.”

Dear Speaker Ryan, Leader Pelosi, Chairman Frelinghuysen, and Ranking Member Lowey:

As Members of the Congressional delegations of Texas and Florida, two states that sustained extensive damage in the recent devastating hurricane season, we write to express our strong dissatisfaction with the utterly inadequate disaster supplemental appropriations request from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The severely underfunded request neglects the fundamental needs of our states and will not provide the bare minimum necessary for our states to continue recovering from the storms. Moreover, the funding currently proposed is not allocated to provide for an effective recovery. Unless the disaster supplemental appropriations bill is significantly improved before it is brought to a vote on the House floor, we will be unable to support this legislation.

We look forward to meeting with you to discuss how to improve the bill. As our communities continue to recover, we are committed to ensuring they are provided the resources that are necessary to alleviate the damage and better withstand future disasters.
