Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership
Galveston's Island Transit Sets Public Meeting to Discuss Proposed Services Reduction
News Release
Friday, December 29, 2017

GALVESTON, Texas - To aid communications and enhance community engagement, the City of Galveston is encouraging citizens to attend a public meeting Thursday January 4th, 2018 from 5PM to 6PM in Council Chambers located at 823 Rosenberg, Galveston, TX 77550 regarding proposed reduction to Island Transit's evening weekday lifeline services.

The City of Galveston is considering significant reductions to evening services provided by Island Transit in a continued effort to operate more efficiently. Those revisions include eliminating the weekday Lifeline Route that operates from 7:00pm to 11:30pm Monday through Friday, as well as altering the operating times for the Saturday and Sunday Lifeline Route to follow ridership trends. Fixed route services will remain unchanged.

After Hurricane Ike, the island's population fell below the requirement needed to qualify the City for federal small urban transit funding. While interim assistance was made available beginning in 2012, Island Transit is scheduled to lose approximately $500,000 in grant funding in fiscal year 2018. Additionally, Island Transit lost funding for the operations evening and weekend service through a $250,000 Job Access-Reverse Commute (JARC) Grant that expired in 2015.

Contributing to the current losses being felt by the organization is the continued decline in ridership on the evening and weekend service.

Proposed Changes

As a result, the proposed changes are being considered:

  • Island Transit is proposing to eliminate weekday Lifeline Route operating from 7:00pm to 11:30 pm Monday- Friday
  • Island Transit is also proposing to eliminate the evening Lifeline service after 7:00pm on Saturdays as well, with weekend Lifeline service limited to 7:00am to 7:00pm Saturday and Sundays 8:00am to 7:00pm.

Public Input Welcomed

Representatives from Island Transit will be available at the public meeting to answer questions and concerns the public may have regarding the proposed service changes. If members of the public cannot make the public meeting and have a comment, they may call Island Transit at (409)797-3900, visit the Island Transit offices 3115 Market, or by email For requests for reasonable meeting accommodations, call (409-797-3900 at least five days prior to the meeting. Comments will be accepted from December 27th, 2017 through January 15th, 2018.
