Utility poles and wires being removed on a portion of Friendswood Drive

The first visible project of the Friendswood Downtown Economic Development Corporation (FDEDC) is to make some things disappear.

More than 1,250 feet of lines and some AT&T utility poles are being removed and new underground cable installed along the west side of Friendswood Drive from Clearview Avenue to Castlewood Drive.  The month-long project should be completed by the end of December, weather permitting.

The estimated cost of this pole removal and cable burying project is $71,271. It was approved by City Council at their September meeting.

“This project is a great first step on a growing list of projects under consideration. It aesthetically improves Friendswood Drive and that will play a role in promoting new and expanded business development in the downtown area,” said Ron Cox, FDEDC President.

“We are also looking at the best use of funds for other projects which would improve streets, infrastructure, sidewalks, lighting, benches, and signs,” he added.

FDEDC was created following voter approval of a one-eighth cent sales tax for downtown economic development in 2016.  The FDEDC board is comprised of seven members of the community appointed by the City Council.
