One of Houston’s top bakeries turns to Small Business Development Center for guidance
San Jacinto College SBDC helped El Bolillo Bakery secure third location in Pasadena

 

PASADENA, Texas – Anyone who visits an El Bolillo Bakery can see it takes a dedicated team to ensure that warm, fresh, sweet bread makes it out of the oven just in time for the early morning rush.

 

Such dedication recently made headlines when the bakery’s employees stayed overnight during Hurricane Harvey to make fresh batches of bread for people in need. How to assemble that perfect team for an award-winning bakery is something Kirk Michaelis has learned over his 20 years as owner, and he’s recruited the San Jacinto College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) as part of the team. 

 

From his first and second bakery locations on Wayside Drive and Airline Drive in Houston to his new location on Southmore Avenue in Pasadena, Michaelis has trusted longtime friend Richard Prets, director of the San Jacinto College SBDC, when it comes to location scouting and business planning.

 

“When I began looking for my third location, I turned to Richard and the Small Business Development Center,” said Michaelis. “Richard knows the market. He also knew my facility requirements for the Pasadena location.”

 

The San Jacinto College Small Business Development Center provides business advising, training and solutions to entrepreneurs of small and emerging companies. Growing businesses, like that of El Bolillo Bakery, meet with advisors to evaluate financing alternatives, develop loan packages, review and update business plans and strategies and access financial check-ups and recommendations.

 

When it came time to expand the El Bolillo Bakery, Prets knew the resources to help get the job done. “We teach people how to write business plans and prepare bank loan applications, but in this case, Kirk knew how to do all that; he needed help with the location,” said Prets. “I assisted with identifying properties and with providing demographic data for the new Pasadena El Bolillo Bakery location.”

 

This wasn’t the first time Michaelis turned to the San Jacinto College SBDC. Prets was instrumental in finding the right team of IT students from the University of Houston to help Michaelis with technology selection and implementation at his Wayside El Bolillo Bakery. 

 

“The San Jacinto College SBDC is here to advise small business owners with any aspect of their businesses,” said Prets. “We help any entrepreneur who needs assistance, and we’re a free resource.”
