Texas City — In a rare move, College of the Mainland Trustees conducted an “open” evaluation of COM President Dr. Warren Nichols during its regular monthly board meeting held Dec. 11.

The evaluation, held in public, lasted less than a half hour and reviewed a list of the College’s notable achievements since Dr. Nichols was named president in February.

The president received “five stars,” said Board Chairman Kyle Dickson. No further action was taken.

In a report to the board, Dr. Nichols’ pointed to progress toward several major college goals:

1) Student Success
• Increased enrollment during both summer sessions and fall
• New initiatives, such as Finish Faster and Guided Pathways, which help students succeed in greater numbers and complete college programs more quickly and with less expense.
2) Employee Fulfillment
• Multi-year contracts for new, full-time faculty
• Expanded community engagement
• Expanded professional development opportunities,
3) Exemplary Facilities
• Added a new center in League City to accommodate dual credit enrollment, with cost borne by student tuition.
• Sell of $16 million maintenance tax bonds to begin renovating several aging campus buildings during spring 2018.

Trustees cited Dr. Nichols’ actions before, during and after Hurricane Harvey as an example of his exemplary leadership.
