Galveston City Council on Thursday officially welcomed Vernon Hale as the city's next chief of police.

Hale was confirmed on Thursday by a unanimous vote of the city council. Mayor Jim Yarbrough was absent. Listen (7:38).

Hale will replace Chief Richard Boyle, who retires in February. The city received 46 applicants for the position, which was narrowed down by City Manager Brian Maxwell, who selected Hale as the sole finalist last week.

Hale is deputy chief of police at the Dallas Police Department. He began his career in Dallas in 1992, starting as a patrol officer.

Following Hale's nomination, he fielded questions from the press. Listen (11:00)

Hale noted Galveston's attractions and standard of living as a reason he applied for the position and why it received so many candidates. However, he also said the size of the community played a role in his interest.

“It was small enough for me to be able to have a direct impact on the community and the police department, I hope a positive impact, but also large enough with all the events and everything else going on to hopefully give me challenges every single day to learn from,” Hale said.

Juan Peña provided photos and audio from Thursday's meeting naming Hale as chief.
