Galveston City Council on Thursday voted unanimously to appoint Council Member Dr. Craig Brown and Assistant City Manager Rick Beverlin to the Houston-Galveston Area Council Transportation Policy Council and Public Works Director Kyle Hockersmith and City Engineer Daniel Christodoss to the H-GAC Technical Advisory Committee.

The city council voted unanimously to confirm the city manager’s appointment of Vernon Hale as Galveston Police Chief. Listen (7:42)

Hale, who was hired from the Dallas Police Department of which he is currently chief, emerged from a field of three candidates. Article

“Mr. Hale did shine above them all in his interview,” said City Manager Brian Maxwell. “We felt like – I guess there’s no other way to put it – but after you talk to Mr. Hale for five minutes, you felt like you know him your whole life.”

Mayor Pro Tem Terrilyn Tarlton-Shannon said that Hale will “add a lot to the community.”

Hale’s first day in his new position will be January 2, 2018.

The city council voted unanimously to add provisions for the regulation of substandard buildings to Chapter 10 of the city code. Listen (2:17)

“It compiles the different ordinances we have in the city and brings them together under one and makes them user-friendly,” said Dr. Brown.

The city council voted 5-0-1, with Amy Bly abstaining, to designate real property located at 902 Winnie as a historically or archeological significant site in need of tax relief to encourage its preservation.

The city council voted unanimously to appoint Oluwaratimi Folorunso to the Families, Children and Youth Board.

The city council deferred the following five items:

  • Consider for approval an ordinance of the City of Galveston, Texas, amending the 2015 Galveston Land Development Regulations (LDR’s), as amended, to update, revise and clarify those provisions regulating land development activity within the city.
  • Consider for approval a resolution of the City Council of the City of Galveston, Texas, acknowledging the previous action of the City of Galveston City Council abandoning certain rights or way in that area known as Classic Porretto Beach under Ordinance 78-46.
  • Consider for approval a resolution of the City Council of the City of Galveston, Texas, approving an interlocal agreement with the Treasure Island Municipal Utility District Providing for the supply of water to the Treasure Island MUD from the City of Galveston.
  • Consideration of a resolution of the City Council of the City of Galveston, Texas, approving and ratifying the agreement proposed between the City of Galveston and Randy Williams, Trustee in Case No. 09-35324.
  • Consider for action a motion to remove George Parsons from the Landmark Commission for failure to attend seventy-five percent of the Landmark Commission meetings within a twelve month period as required by Galveston City Code Sec. 2-164.

The city council took no action on an item creating a Planned Unit Development Overlay Zoning District in a Commercial Base Zoning District on property commonly known as 5327 Broadway.
