Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner today held a news conference to announce that The Way Home homeless initiative has reached its goal of finding housing for 500 of the city’s homeless.

Turner noted the challenges that organizations that partnered with the city for the initiative faced, including cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development funding, which resulted in stopping the issuance of new rental assistance vouchers, and Hurricane Harvey.

“Despite all those challenges and bumps in the road, I’m excited to announce today that The Way Home has achieved the goal of housing 500 of our hardest to house homeless individuals,” Turner said, noting that the goal had been set in March, and reached in August. Listen (22:33)

“Not only did they achieve it, they beat it,” Turner said, pointing out that more than 90 homeless have been housed each month.

Turner called the effort a “heavy lift” and outstanding accomplishment.

“This is how we will continue to assist those living on the streets,” Turner said.

During the news conference, Turner presented proclamations, declaring today as The Way Home Day, to representatives from several organizations that helped house homeless individuals.
