SAILOR UNIVERSITY AT SEA STAR BASE GALVESTON

GALVESTON, Texas – Sea Star Base Galveston announces inaugural Sailor University, December 26 – 31, is filled to capacity.

This week student, 14 – 20 years old, are the first to experience Sailor University presented by Sea Star Base Galveston in partnership with the United States Power Squadron and Texas Parks & Wildlife.

The first of the advanced navigational classes focusing on techniques for piloting a boat in coastal and inland conditions, the course emphasizes planning and checking, along with the use of GPS, for determining position,  and introduces digital charting along with traditional charting, compass, and dead reckoning skills.  Plotting, labeling use of the compass, aids to navigation, and a host of related topics are included in this all-new approach to coastal and inland piloting.

Sea Scouts that attend will complete all of the piloting and navigation requirements for all ranks, and various other rank requirements as well. Sailor University is open to all students who want to learn about sailing and navigation; you do not have to be a Scout to attend.

Sea Star Base Galveston is a high adventure marine and maritime destination, offering aquatic education programs that instill lifetime leadership, teamwork skills and indepenced in body, mind and spirit. Located at 7509 Broadway on Offatt’s Bayou.  SSBG offers programs year round including STEM to Stern aboard the BaySmart Express, educational camps and courses.    

In addition to fun and fellowship, the Sailor U will include classroom instruction and on the water training and experience. A pre requisite for students is a passing grade in algebra and the completion of a boating course from either Texas Parks and Wildlife or the Unites States Power Squadron. Students are provided room and board, classroom books, supplies, piloting tools, power boats and sailboats.
