Public Safety News
Galveston County Sheriff's Office
News Release
Friday, December 29, 2017

On 12-29-17 around 1:15 A.M., a Galveston County Sheriff’s Office deputy was standing out front of a convenience store. The location was the intersection of State Highway 146 and Grand Ave., Bacliff, Galveston County. A dark colored Chevy pickup truck traveling eastbound on Grand Ave. fired a single shot towards the deputy and clerk. The projectile struck the marked unit on the driver’s side rear passenger door. The deputy chased the truck and a pursuit ensued through the Bacliff area. Other units assisted in the pursuit until the operator lost control of the truck in the 3700 block of Bayshore Drive. The truck left the roadway, striking a power pole and finally came to rest after hitting a wooden fence. Two (2) occupants of the truck fled on foot. Both occupants appeared to be males according to pursuing deputies. Deputies chased the occupants but finally lost sight of them. Other agencies arrived and assisted in setting a perimeter in the area. K-9 units and a HPD helicopter also assisted in the search.

At the scene of the crash, a black and silver semi-automatic handgun was found on the ground next the truck.

A short time later, Galveston County dispatch received a call in the area about a suspicious male at a house. The caller reported the male told them he had been involved in a motor vehicle crash and requested their assistance. Deputies and Troopers from DPS arrived and detained the male. At that time the deputies learned the detained male was the registered owner of the truck involved in the event. He was detained and returned to the scene.

Detectives and Forensic investigators from the Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to further the investigation. The male detained admitted to being in the vehicle and investigators learned he was the owner of the handgun found on the ground.

The male was identified as Charles Joseph Porras Jr, white/male, 10-31-90 out of La Marque, Galveston County, Texas. He was charged with Aggravated Assault on Public Servant and bond was set at $150,000.00 by the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.

At the time of this release, the investigation is still on-going by Criminal Investigators of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.
