Freezing Temperatures Expected Late Through Wednesday

Galveston, Texas – January 2nd, 2018 - Galveston Island is under a hard freeze warning through 9am Wednesday, January 3rd.  Additionally, a second round of light snow and sleet is possible from 6pm through midnight tonight. City officials are urging Islanders to take precautions and prepare for the inclement weather.

The Galveston Island Causeway will remain open.  This roadway is a State priority.  All traffic lanes will remain open unless ice accumulation requires lane closures.  In the event of icy conditions later tonight, travel across the causeway will be restricted to one inbound and one outbound lane.  Crews are closely monitoring the causeway’s deck temperature.

The City is not opening the Emergency Operations Center.  In case of an emergency please call 9-1-1 immediately.  For information please call non-emergency dispatch, 409-765-3702.  The public is urged to call family and friends to make sure they are protected from the cold.  Bring all pets indoors.  Protect exposed pipes and plants.

City Operations & Facilities:

The City will open for business tomorrow, Wednesday, January 3rd at 8AM as usual.

Island Roadways:

City crews are monitoring roadways and will apply aggregate to restore traction as needed.
