Harris County Fire Marshal Encourages Heating Safety

Harris County – Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths. With temperatures across Harris County are expected to dip well below freezing, the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office encourages residents to practice heating safety.

“Heating equipment fires are preventable,” said Harris County Fire Marshal Mike Montgomery. “By following a few simple precautions, residents can stay warm and safe during cold weather.”

The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office encourages residents to follow these heating safety tips:

  • Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from any heat source.
  • Keep children at least three-feet away from any heat source.
  • Never use your oven to heat your home.
  • Keep heat sources, such as portable heaters, on hard flat surfaces.
  • Turn off portable heaters when leaving a room or going to bed.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly.

The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office is responsible for fire prevention, education, control and investigation in the unincorporated areas of Harris County.
