Car Drives Over Seawall With Unconscious Driver

On Friday morning, January 5th 2018, at approximately 11:25 am, the Galveston Police Department received several calls that a vehicle had just driven over the Seawall at 28th St.  Galveston Police Department’s Officer Lopez was the first officer to arrive on scene and found a grey Honda Accord that had partially driven over the Sewall.  Officer Lopez observed that the driver was unresponsive, had no pulse, and wasn’t breathing, so he immediately began administering CPR to the sole occupant of the vehicle.  Officer Lopez continued CPR until medics with Galveston EMS and Galveston Fire Department arrived to take over, after which, the 72 year-old man’s heart began beating and he began breathing on his own as he was transported to JSER by Galveston EMS.

Witnesses to the crash stated that the vehicle was traveling toward the Seawall on 28th St at about 10mph, rolled through the stop sign and proceeded across Seawall Blvd until it fell off of the Seawall.  It is believed at this time that the driver of the only vehicle involved in the crash experienced some sort of debilitating medical event prior to the crash, rendering him unconscious while behind the wheel.  The driver of the vehicle, a Galveston resident, is currently at JSER in critical condition and it is unknown if he will survive at this time. It is not believed at this time that the driver suffered any additional major injuries as a result of the crash.
