Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Parade, Essay Contest, Church Service, Unity Prayer Circle

GALVESTON, Texas – Join in the numerous festivities and annual parade for the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day!  The weekend will kick-off as Galveston Police Chief Vernon Hale leads the parade as this year’s honorary Grand Marshal on Saturday followed by an essay contest and church service held on Sunday.  Events will conclude on Monday with the unity prayer circle at St. Vincent’s House.  A complete list of activities is noted below.  As a reminder, City Hall and all administrative offices will be closed on Monday, January 15th, 2018.

WHAT: MLK Parade 

WHERE: Starts on 29th Street & Church; Proceeds down 29th Street;

 Ends at Menard Park – 2222 28th Street

WHEN: Saturday, January 13th: Procession line-up 11 AM; Parade at 1 PM

WHAT: 17th Annual – MLK Essay Contest & Reception 
WHERE: 2627 Avenue M – Old Cultural Center

WHEN:  Sunday, January 14th – 3 PM to 5 PM
Sponsored by the African American Heritage Committee of the Galveston Historical Foundation

WHAT:  MLK Church Service featuring the MLK Service Awards, including Humanitarian of the Year
WHERE:  2612 Ave L – Missionary Baptist Church
WHEN:  Sunday, January 14th – 7 PM to 9 PM

WHAT:  Unity Prayer Circle: All religious denominations gather to pray for Unity, Peace, and Love

WHERE: 2817 Postoffice Street – Saint Vincent’s House

WHEN:  Monday, January 15th – 11 AM – 12:30 PM
