The City of Galveston hosted a parade and other festivities on Saturday in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The MLK Parade kicked off at 29th Street and Church and ended at Menard Park. Newly-hired Galveston Police Chief Vernon Hale served as honorary Grand Marshal for this year's parade.









Other events included the 17th Annual MLK Essay Contest & Reception on Sunday at the Old Cultural Center. The event was sponsored by the African American Heritage Committee of the Galveston Historical Foundation. Missionary Baptist Church hosted services and the MLK Service Awards.
