Winter Weather Warning Issued for Galveston Island
With freezing rain and sleet Tuesday, City urges residents to stay weather aware and off the roads.

Galveston, Texas - Galveston Island is under a winter weather warning through midnight on Tuesday January 16th. City officials are urging Islanders to take precautions and prepare for the inclement weather.

The Galveston Island Causeway will remain open. This roadway is a State priority. All traffic lanes will remain open unless ice accumulation requires lane closures. TXDOT is continuing salting operations on all state highways including IH45, the causeway, and 61st St and at 1pm today reapplied solution to diminish the effects of possible icing expected later this evening. City crews, in coordination with TXDOT, are also sanding local roads and intersections to assist in roadway safety around the island. The Galveston Police Department is urging residents to stay off the roadways if possible. If you must be on the roadways, please allow extra time for travel, and allow adequate space in between you and other vehicles on the road.

Weather Updates as of 3pm on January 16th:

  • The Island will be under a Winter Weather Warning through midnight on Tuesday, January 16th with a mixture of sleet/freezing rain anticipated to continue in the area.
  • There is a Gale Warning in effect for the Island as well as a Small Craft Advisory for Galveston Bay through Wednesday morning.
  • With sustained offshore winds, it’s possible to see tides as much as a foot lower than normal.

Island Roadways:

  • TXDOT is continuing salting operations on all state highways including IH45, the causeway, and 61st St and at 1pm today reapplied solution to diminish the effects of possible icing expected later this evening.

Island Transit Service Interruptions:

  • League City Park & Ride has been suspended for Tuesday, January 16th, and Wednesday, January 17th.
  • There will be no lifeline service this evening.
  • There will be no Island Express service tomorrow, Wednesday, January 17th.
  • Fixed Route services will be delayed on Wednesday, January 17th, and will begin at noon.
  • Trolley services have been suspended Tuesday, January 16th, and Wednesday, January 17th.

City Operations & Facilities:

  • City facilities closed at 2pm on Tuesday, January 16th.
  • The City will make a determination on delaying the opening of facilities Wednesday January 17th. based on conditions at 10pm tonight.
