Hard Freeze Warning in Effect for Houston from 9pm Tonight to 9am Thursday

The National Weather Service has issued a Hard Freeze Warning for Houston from 9:00pm Tonight until 9:00am Thursday.  Temperatures are expected to range from 15 to 22 degrees overnight.

Primary hazards from this freeze woudl be hypothermia for people and pets, damage to vegetation and possible damage to unprotected pipes.  The City of Houston encourages residents to protect the 4 P's:

  • People should dress warmly, in layers, to avoid hypothermia (abnormally low body temperature).
  • Pets should be brought indoors or provided with a warm place to sleep.
  • Pipes that run outside or under a house should be wrapped in pipe insulation to avoid cracks due to water freezing in them.
  • Plants may need to be covered or brought inside to avoid frost damage.

Warming Centers

The City of Houston, in partnership with the American Red Cross has opened warming centers in Houston to assist individuals who need a warm place to stay tonight. Additionally, some faith-based organizations and non-profits have opened their doors for neighbors to spend the night.

For information on warming centers locations and to arrange for transportation from METRO, call 311 (713.837.0311).
