The Houston Independent School District Board of Education on Thursday elected board officers for the coming year, with Trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones unanimously elected as president of the board.

Jolanda Jones was elected as first vice president, and Anne Sung as second vice president. Sergio Lira was named board secretary and Holly Maria Flynn Vilaseca as assistant secretary.

The board voted unanimously to approve campus turnaround plans for four schools in the district.

Bonham Elementary School, Gregory-Lincoln Education Center, Madison High School and Washington High School have not met state standards for two years. News Release

The board took no action regarding approval of an expenditure for the December 9 Runoff Election for Districts I and III. The item was pulled as exact cost figures were not available during the meeting.

The board voted 7-2, with Jolanda Jones and Elizabeth Santos opposed, to approve the board's self-evaluations, time use tracker and quarterly progress tracker in accordance with the Texas Educaton Agency Implementation Integrity Instrument.

The board voted 7-2, with Jolanda Jones and Diana Davila opposed, to approve vendor awards for purchases of $100,000 and ratification of vendor awards for purchases under $100,000.

The board voted 8-0-1, with Skillern-Jones abstaining, to approve a finding of no good cause for educators to resign or abandon employment contracts without district consent under the Education Code and to authorize submission of a written complaint for imposing sanctions, as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 8-0-1, with Skillern-Jones abstaining, to approve termination of probationary contracts and non-renewal of proposed contracts as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 8-0-1, with Skillern-Jones abstaining, to approve a limited waiver of an attorney-client privileged letter related to the matter of Richard Patton vs. Houston Independent School District, as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 8-0-1, with Skillern-Jones abstaining, to authorize settlement in the matter of Oscar Galaviz vs. Houston Independent School District as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 8-0-1, with Skillern-Jones abstaining, to authorize settlement in the matter of Kaleb D., b/n/f of Karen D. vs. Houston Independent School District, as discussed in closed session.

The board took no action on any other items discussed in closed session.
