CIS-Bay Area Receives $130,000 From Houston Endowment

Communities In Schools – Bay Area (CIS-Bay Area) has received a two-year grant from the Houston Endowment in the amount of $130,000 to provide programming for the Dickinson Independent School District.

CIS-Bay Area is a dropout prevention program that provides school-based case management services for over 1,400 at-risk and economically disadvantaged students on 6 Dickinson and 9 Clear Creek ISD campuses. The Houston Endowment funding will support a new pilot program, the Dickinson Community Partnership Project. The project will provide services for at-risk students on 5 underserved Dickinson ISD campuses, with a focus on addressing the needs of students impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

The Houston Endowment has been a long-time partner of CIS-Bay Area and has awarded $630,000 in grant monies since 2004. Dr. Peter Wuenschel, CIS-Bay Area executive director, says “The generous contribution from the Houston Endowment enables us to improve the quality of life for Dickinson students impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Communities In Schools – Bay Area will address gaps in service provision at underserved campuses by working in partnership with district social workers, providing accessibility to critical recovery resources and support.”

Jill Wells is the project coordinator for the new program implemented in January 2018. Wells previously worked as a CIS-Bay Area site coordinator at Lobit Middle School.
