by Garrett Bryce
Wednesday, January 24, 2018

Shoreacres City Council on Monday voted 2-3, with only Ron Hoskins and David Jennings voting in favor of approval, to deny a motion to order a special election on May 5 to propose to voters whether the city of Shoreacres shall be consolidated with the City of La Porte.

The city had received a petition signed by voters to request the election to consolidate the cities. A total of 106 valid signatures were on the petition, which exceeds 15 percent of the total votes cast in the May 6, 2017 General Election.

The city council voted 4-1, with Hoskins opposed, to appoint an acting city manager until a city manager is appointed.

Buck Laquey was appointed acting city manager, who will fill the vacancy that will be left by City Manager David Stall's retirement.

The city council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution executing a re-rate agreement renewing and extending an interlocal agreement with the Texas Municipal League's Intergovernmental Employee Benefits Pool for the purpose of providing employee benefits.

The city council voted voted unanimously to order an election for May 5 to elect the mayor and one city council position.

The city council voted 3-2, with Jennings and Jerome McKown opposed, to designate The Bay Area Observer as the official newspaper.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote. Mayor Kim Sanford was absent. Mayor Pro Tem Ricky Bowles presided over the meeting. Agenda
