ACC Across the Curriculum Conference

Alvin Community College will host a conference to provide local educators with an opportunity to share their methods in the classroom while also learning about how to make improvements.

The second annual Across the Curriculum Conference will be held at the Science/Health Science Building on February 16 on the ACC campus. The theme is Living and Learning in the 21st Century College.

The 2018 keynote speaker will be Dr. Caroline Crawford, an associate professor of Instructional Design with the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She is also the author of An Anthology of Educational Innovation: Digital Frameworks of Understanding.

“We have some great presentations lined up on topics that are important to today’s educators,” said Keith Vyvial English instructor and event organizer.

Presenters at the conference will include faculty, administrators, tutors, student mentors to share their best practices for research, student success and challenges.

The Across the Curriculum is supported, in part, from an Innovative Initiative Grant from the ACC Foundation.

Some of the topics covered will include mindful use of technology, active learning, student retention, and pedagogy vs. andragogy.

“We are working to bring participants presentations that will be of benefit in any classroom in any field of study,” Vyvial said.

More than 60 educators from local schools joined instructors from as well as College of the Mainland, Lee College, Wharton County Junior College, Houston Baptist University, and Western Governor's University attended the first conference in 2017.

Vyvial said ACC hopes to build on that success and attract a wider audience this year.

The conference will also feature two expanded discussion panels.

“Our student discussion panel was so well-received that we are bringing it back,” Vyvial said. “We  are also adding the faculty panel for this conference.”

The conference is free and is open to any higher education faculty as well as high school staff teaching dual credit.

Presentation proposals are being excepted for the conference.

Educators can also earn Continuing Professional Education credits for attendance. ACC is a provider of CPE to Texas educators for certificate renewal purposes.
