Island Experiences Two Separate Fatality Accidents over the Weekend

On Saturday, January 27th at 2:06 am, the Galveston Police Department received a report of a major accident that occurred in front of the Raceway Gas Station located at 5714 Ave J.

Upon arrival, Galveston Police Officers observed two vehicles, a maroon in color Toyota Tundra and a black in color Honda Element, both with significant damage, resting on the property of the Raceway.  The Honda Element sustained damage to the rear of the vehicle, and the Toyota Tundra sustained substantial front-end damage.

Witnesses on scene advised, the black Honda Element had entered the median at 5700 Ave J and had negotiated a left turn into the center lane, heading westbound. The Toyota Tundra was traveling westbound in the center lane in the 5700 Block of Ave J when it struck the black Honda Element in the rear, causing the Honda Element to spin out and come to rest in the grassy area in front of the Raceway Gas Station.

Two adults in the Honda Element were treated by Galveston EMS and released at the scene.  Three male adults were occupying the Toyota Tundra. The front passenger of the truck fled the scene before police arrived while the driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to JSER for additional treatment. The rear passenger of the vehicle, a 51-year-old Houston area resident, sustained major head injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to JSER where he was declared deceased.

The second collision occurred on Sunday afternoon, January 28th, at approximately 12:30 pm officers were dispatched to several calls of what witnesses state was around 100 motorcycles coming inbound on IH45 driving recklessly and speeding.  As officers were responding, a second call came in advising that one of the motorcycles was just involved in a collision at 61st St and Ave L.

Witnesses state that one of the motorcycles was trailing behind the group, attempting to catch up, as they travelled southbound down 61st St from Ave J.  At the same time, a maroon Chevrolet Silverado attempted to turn left from the northbound lanes of 61st St onto Ave L when the Yamaha R6 motorcycle and its single rider struck the truck.  The motorcyclist, a 25-year-old Houston resident, sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to JSER where he eventually succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased late last night.

The Galveston Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team, the Galveston Police Department Crime Scene Investigations Unit, and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office responded to both scenes to conduct detailed investigations into the causes of both collisions.

The Galveston Police Department and the Galveston County District Attorney’s office will be working together as the investigation unfolds to determine if charges, in either case, are appropriate.

As such, if anyone has any information concerning this investigation, please contact the Galveston Police Department at (409) 765-3702 or Galveston Crime Stoppers at (409) 763-8477.
