Council Member Dave Martin to visit San Antonio Mayor and City Council
News Release
Wednesday, February 07, 2018

Houston - On Thursday, February 8, Houston Council Member Dave Martin will be traveling to San Antonio with the support of  Mayor Sylvester Turner. The purpose of this trip is to honor the City of San Antonio for its selfless contribution and active involvement during Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts.

Council Member Dave Martin will be presenting the Mayor of San Antonio, Ron Nirenberg, with a City of Houston Proclamation as well as an award to San Antonio Solid Waste Department Director, David McCary.

On the weekend of August 26, 2017, the greater Houston area experienced a life altering disaster. Houstonians dealt with devastating losses due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey through compassionate cities willing to serve during this difficult time, Houston has remained resilient in its recovery efforts.

On September 4, 2017, the City of San Antonio Solid Waste Department came to the aid of Houston City Council District E where the Kingwood Community had been devastated due to extreme flooding. The City of San Antonio sent nearly 100 members of their skilled Solid Waste Department Staff, 15 grapplers, and 45 dump trucks.

The City of San Antonio, even in a new territory, descended on the Lake Houston Area in an exceptionally professional manner placing extreme care in conducting their job. The San Antonio workers were quick to act and diligent in their efforts to swiftly remove what flood waters had damaged. During this time, the San Antonio crews were working 10-hour days, 7 days a week, in the Texas heat away from their families and comforts of home. These men and women were rocks for the Kingwood Community sharing many hugs and wiping away tears.

The City of Houston commends and appreciates the City of San Antonio for their compassion during a historic disaster, as their selflessness is greatly appreciated by many people who benefitted from their unwavering generosity.
