Remembering Jim Guidry Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership
Galveston County
Galveston Park Board of Trustees
by Garrett Bryce
Thursday, March 01, 2018

The Galveston Park Board of Trustees on Tuesday voted unanimously to award a contract with Van Scoyoc Associates for federal legislative advocacy services.

Van Scoyoc submitted the low bid of $5,000 per month plus expenses. The firm has provided legislative services to the park board for five years.

The board voted unanimously to approve the 2018 Galveston Park Board Federal Legislative Agenda.

The agenda provides the park board's priorities of federal legislative items it supports and opposes, which include support for continued beneficial use of dredged material, support of monitoring and continued efforts of the RESTORE Act, support of the Lone Star Coastal Recreational Area, and opposition of legislation that would exempt Internet travel brokers from paying taxes on the full room rate paid by the consumer, among other issues. The board discussed, but took no formal action regarding the city's revisions to the Arts and Historical Preservation Ordinance.

The park board has drafted a letter to the city regarding preferred changes to the ordinance. The park board is supporting revisions that would broaden eligible applicants and uses of funding, and recommended that the composition of the city's advisory board remains unchanged. Letter

The park board voted unanimously to continue moving forward regarding the established program for beach maintenance with the United States Army Corps of Engineers through the upcoming season, and to bring a report back to the board in June.

The board voted unanimously to appoint Joan Marshall to the Tourism Development Advisory Committee.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote. Trustee Rocky Sullivan was absent, and John Zendt arrived later in the meeting. Agenda
