News Release
Friday, March 02, 2018

BEAUMONT, Texas — Gladdie Fowler, chairman of the board of trustees at Spindletop Center, received the Richard E. Hopkins Community Leader Torch Award at the Central Texas African American Family Support Conference on Feb. 28 at the Palmer Events Center in Austin.

The annual conference, currently in its 18th year, serves as an opportunity for professionals, individuals and families to explore mental health challenges, raise awareness of healthcare services, foster partnerships, increase access to care and reduce stigma.

The Torch Award honors the work and advocacy of Richard E. Hopkins, vice chair of the board of trustees at Austin Travis County Integral Care. Nominees demonstrate dedication to mental health, substance use, co-occurring disorders and physical health advocacy in Central Texas. The award is given to a consumer, community leader and professional.

Fowler, who has served on the board for over 35 years, is a retired Port Arthur Independent School District principal. She is also the first African American woman to serve as a board chair of Life Resources. She is locally known as the “Turn-A-Round and Change Agent” for her commitment to improving low-performing schools.

Fowler established the first service learning club in the Port Arthur ISD. She is an advocate for adults and children with special needs, and frequently informs state legislators of the need for funding and programs.
