Beaumont ISD Early College and Regina-Howell named Texas Honor Roll Schools

(BEAUMONT, TX) - Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) Early College High School and Regina-Howell Elementary have been named “Texas Honor Roll” schools for 2017-2018 by the Institute for Productivity and the Education Results Partnership (ERP).

Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) partnered with BISD in August 2016, when the venture was approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). According to the TEA, innovative early college high school programs like this one at LIT allow 9th through 12th grade students to earn a high school diploma and an associate's degree within 6 months of graduating at no cost to the students, thus greatly reducing barriers to college access. Only 6.1% of Texas schools received the "Star" award designation and of that, only 0.4% were early college high schools.

The Texas Honor Roll recognizes public schools for demonstrating consistently higher levels of student academic achievement, an improvement over time and a reduction in achievement gaps among ethnic minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Honor Roll is also the only school recognition program in Texas using only student achievement outcomes as the criteria, according to Greg Jones, ERP board chairman. “After an extensive analysis of student data for every public school in Texas, (BISD/LIT) was a clear leader in getting students to grade level and beyond,” Jones said.

“The Beaumont Independent School District is extremely proud of the accomplishments of both Regina -Howell Elementary and the Early College High School. The current success of the students at ECHS is exciting, and the District will maintain high expectations for the program as well as continue to cultivate the excellent partnership with LIT,” said Dr. Shannon Allen, Associate Superintendent for Secondary Administration for BISD.

Dr. Lonnie L. Howard, LIT President, said, “I want to commend the BISD Board, Superintendent Frossard, and all of the teachers and staff. This Honor Roll award epitomizes the true value of our LIT//BISD partnership.” He added, “We at LIT celebrate with BISD this tremendous accomplishment.”

James Lanich, Ph.D., ERP president and CEO added, “These bright spot schools and districts are implementing programs and practices that are improving educational equity and accelerating student success.” A complete list of honorees can be found at http://edresults.org/HonorRoll/HonorRoll.
