Heavy Rainfall Potential for This Weekend
News Release
Thursday, June 14, 2018

What is the danger?

The National Weather Service (NWS) is monitoring a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico that is expected to move into the Texas coastal area Saturday. Currently, it only has a 10 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next five days.

There is a potential for 3-5 inches of rainfall expected over the weekend. Shorts bursts of showers and thunderstorms may begin as early as today.

According to NWS, the current dry conditions will cause much of the rainfall to be absorbed in the ground. However, heavy rainfall over a short period could produce isolated areas of street flooding and ponding.

What you need to do:

As this is still developing, we are encouraging everyone to monitor the weather multiple times a day throughout the weekend.

Follow and check for updates from trusted sources for latest weather and safety information including National Weather Service Houston-Galveston, Harris County Flood Control District, and ReadyHarris.

Check driving conditions before getting on roadways by visiting Houston TranStar’s website: www.houstontranstar.org.

Live rainfall rates can be found using the Harris County Flood Warning System Website: www.harriscountyfws.org.

All residents should have a plan for tropical weather. If you live in an evacuation zone and will need assistance evacuating for a storm that threatens our region, please call 2-1-1 and register today. Go to www.readyharris.org for hurricane preparedness information and to sign up for emergency alerts.

HCOHSEM's ReadyHarris mobile app puts the power to build a personalized preparedness plan in the palm of your hand. The free app is available for both Apple and Android devices.
