Fort Bend County Commissioners Court on Tuesday voted 4-1, with Andy Meyers opposed, to approve a request by the Sheriff's Office to purchase a vehicle from Legacy Ford in the amount of $43,859 through use of the Forfeited Assets Fund.

Meyers stated that the court had denied an addition to fleet by Constable Precinct 3, as it had not been budgeted.

“I'm assuming that this vehicle is not budgeted either,” Meyers said. Listen (11:59)

He noted that the situations are similar, and that the sheriff's office should also go through the budgeting process if they wish to add another vehicle.

“I believe that we need to be consistent in how we treat our independent elected officials,” Meyers said.

County Judge Robert Hebert responded, saying that the sheriff's office was not utilizing taxpayer funds as the constable's office would be, but asset seizure funds.

“This is cash that is generated as a result of people who are caught in criminal activity, and those assets are given back to the local law enforcement agency effectively to spend as they will to improve the quality of law enforcement in the county,” Hebert said, noting that he would be opposed to the item if the sheriff's office were requesting taxpayer dollars.
