Coast Guard urges safety during Fourth of July festivities
News Release
Tuesday, July 03, 2018

NEW ORLEANS – With the warmer weather and Fourth of July around the corner, there has been an increase in local boating traffic. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans wants to encourage all boaters to remain responsible while on the water.

Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in more than three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities in 2016, and that 83 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

A few helpful tips for a safe boating season include encouraging all boaters to wear life jackets, maintaining all necessary boater safety requirements, making a float plan, checking the weather frequently and staying hydrated.
