League City CVB and Thornton’s Gymnastic Center to Host March 2019 Competitions
Press Release
Thursday, October 11, 2018

Gymnastics meets expected to draw athletes, coaches, and families to area

The League City Convention & Visitors Bureau will host the 2019 Thornton Invitational and 2019 Texas South State Gymnastics Championships in conjunction with the Thornton Gymnastics Center on March 8-10 and March 22-24, 2019. The two events, which will be contested in City of League City venues for the first time, are expected to draw more than 1,000 coaches, athletes, and their families during the two weekends in March.

“We are excited to grow our competition by hosting this year’s Thornton Invitational at Hometown Heroes Park in partnership with the City of League City,” said former USA Gymnastics team member Todd Thornton, who owns and operates the gymnastics center with his wife and former Texans Cheerleader, Kimberly.

The announcement comes on the heels of an announcement two weeks ago that League City will be hosting the Texas Classic Basketball Tournament, April 26-28, 2019.

“These gymnastics championships are another step in our efforts to build and grow sports tourism in League City by utilizing current City facilities and by building partnerships with local organizations such as Thornton Gymnastics and Clear Creek ISD,” said CVB Administrator Bryan Roller. “Without these partner organizations and champions in our community like Todd and Kimberly we would not be able to bring these types of competitions to our city.”

Over the last three years, League City has hosted nationally-sanctioned pickleball tournaments, Major League Quidditch National Championships, and the Space City Shootout Lacrosse Tournament.
